Edmonton, the province's capital city, is located on the North Saskatchewan River in the fertile farmland of central Alberta, 294 km (183 mi) north of Calgary. It is the second largest city in Alberta (Calgary being the largest), and is home to North America's largest shopping mall, the West Edmonton Mall. Edmonton is the most northerly city in North America with a metropolitan population of over one million.

Edmonton is located near the geographical centre of Alberta, at an elevation of 668 m (2,190 ft). The North Saskatchewan River bisects the city on it's journey from the Columbia Icefield in Jasper National Park to Lake Winnipeg, the Nelson River and on into Hudson Bay. The surrounding terrain is flat to gently rolling, with ravines and deep river valleys. The Canadian Rockies are roughly 220 km (140 mi) to the southwest.

Edmonton offers a wide choice of hotels, including downtown hotels with sweeping vistas of the River Valley and parks. There are more than 13,000 guest rooms in the city's major hotel brands, suite hotels, unique boutique properties and motels.
